Laser Treatment Q&A
How do I know which type of laser treatment I need?
With so many high-quality laser treatments available today, it’s easy to be confused about which ones will effectively treat your specific skin concerns. We have thoroughly evaluated all the laser treatments we offer, and we continually look for improved technologies to offer our patients. Equipped with a full range of laser treatment options, our skin care specialists will evaluate your cosmetic concerns and discuss what you want to achieve before recommending a customized treatment plan.
What’s the difference between laser skin resurfacing and laser skin rejuvenation?
In many cases, you will see these terms used interchangeably. But there is a difference. Resurfacing procedures are focused on removing dead and damaged outer layers of skin. In contrast, rejuvenation procedures work by reaching deeper layers of skin and creating renewal from within. Sometimes these procedures are called “non-ablative,” meaning that they do not ablate, or remove, the outer layer of skin. Often combination treatments may provide the best results.
What’s the best option if I’ve never had a laser treatment before?
The best option will always be what works most effectively to improve your skin care concern. That said, we find that many patients who’ve never had a laser treatment would prefer to start with a less-aggressive treatment so they can see results without much discomfort or downtime. For instance, to address wrinkling, you may want to consider our ClearLift treatment, comfortable alternative to traditional laser skin resurfacing that can be performed over a lunch hour with virtually no downtime.
Are laser treatments painful?
We do everything we can to make your laser treatment as comfortable as possible. Everyone has a different level of sensitivity to laser treatments, and we can apply topical anesthetics to improve comfort. Many patients report treatments feeling like a light rubber band snap against the skin. Discomfort should be minimal once your treatment is finished, and your goal after treatment is to protect your skin so that your body can engage in its natural healing and renewal process.
Which laser treatments offer the quickest recovery?
There is not substantial downtime for many of the laser procedures we perform. For some, like IPL and ClearLift, you can carry on with your day’s regular activities right after leaving the office. For more aggressive laser rejuvenation procedures like our Pixel CO2 laser, there is a period of several days where your skin will be sensitive and need time to heal.
How many treatments will I need?
This all depends on your skin damage, and what type of laser treatment you are having. Some of the less-aggressive lasers tend to work best with a series of treatments scheduled several weeks apart. For those that are more aggressive, a single treatment session is usually enough. We’ll work closely with you to find convenient treatment times.
Will laser skin tightening work for me?
We can evaluate your skin with respect to laxity, sun damage, and wrinkling and let you know the degree of improvement that can be expected from a laser treatment. For significant skin sagging, surgical options such as a facelift may be needed to achieve sufficient correction.
