What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

It is the purified form of botulinum toxin, a neuromodulating protein that occurs in many natural settings, such as soil, lakes, forests, and the intestinal tracts of mammals and fish. It was approved for medical use in 1989 and cosmetic use in 2002.

BOTOX® Cosmetic can treat aesthetic issues such as:

  • Frown lines
  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet

It can also treat medical conditions, including:

  • Migraine headaches
  • Excessive sweating
  • Muscle spasms
  • Facial tics
  • Lazy eye

How Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Work?

Certain facial wrinkles are caused by the repeated, daily muscle contractions you make when you smile, frown, or furrow your brow. BOTOX® Cosmetic temporarily blocks communication between your facial muscles and the nerves that tell them to contract. When those muscles can’t contract, your wrinkles relax.

What’s the Difference Between BOTOX® and Dermal Fillers?

While BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers can both be used to reverse signs of facial aging, they treat entirely different types of aesthetic issues. BOTOX® Cosmetic specifically addresses wrinkles caused by facial muscle contractions. Dermal fillers target wrinkles caused by lost facial volume. Due to their ability to restore lost facial volume, dermal fillers can also be used to improve the appearance of:

  • Thinning lips
  • Sunken cheeks and temples
  • Circles under the eyes
  • Recessed scars

You can also receive BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers together to maximize the restoration of your youthful look.

Recovery After BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX® Cosmetic is non-invasive and non-surgical. The injections are quick, and you should experience only mild discomfort during treatment. You don’t have to deal with sutures, stitches, or incisions. You can return to your normal activities immediately.

Is BOTOX® Cosmetic Permanent?

The treatment should take effect 24 to 72 hours after you receive your injection. Your results should last three to four months. Even though BOTOX® Cosmetic isn’t permanent, it becomes more effective with each treatment. With successive treatments, your wrinkles come back less pronounced than before, and repeated treatments can keep you relatively wrinkle-free.

Is BOTOX® Cosmetic Safe?

Absolutely. It is the purified and powdered form of botulinum toxin. It’s also diluted with saline before it’s injected. The quantities BOTOX® Cosmetic is administered in are far below the concentration levels where it could potentially be harmful. However, it is vital that your treatment is performed by a skilled provider such as Dr. Kramer.
